Am Vormittag werdn Dr. Olivier Küttel, Dr. Regina Schneider (Euresearch) und Dr. Robert Burmanjer (European Commission Research & Innovation) über die Struktur, Inhalte und Erwartungen der EU sowie Best Practices und Erfahrungen im aktuellen Rahmenprogramm informieren.
Im Anschluss werden Prof. Dr. Walter Leimgruber (SNF) und Dr. Rüdiger Klein (ALLEA) in ihren Beiträgen aufzeigen, wo sie mit Blick auf Horizon 2020 die Stärken und die Potenziale der geistes- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung in der Schweiz sehen. Am Nachmittag werden fünf parallele Workshops zu den nachfolgenden im neuen EUForschungsrahmenprogramm vorgesehenen Bereichen angeboten: „Inclusive societies“, „Intelligent growth“, „EU als a global actor“, „Diversity, beliefs and values“ und „Sustainable growth“. In der abschliessenden Paneldiskussion sollen die nächsten Schritte definiert werden.

3rd International Conference on Research for Development (ICRD 2012) Research for Global Transformation

The aim of the 3^rd ICRD is to share and discuss recent insights on development-oriented research conducted in North-South partnerships, and to develop a research policy agenda for global transformation.

The conference will thus contribute to the international agendas currently being redrawn in view of Rio+20. Indeed, the post-Rio+20 era will require adapted policy frameworks, research approaches, and donor environments in order to seek synergies between research partnership projects in the North and the South and jointly identify entry points and pathways to sustainable development.

You may now register for the ICRD 2012. For your convenience, accommodation at different price levels has been pre-reserved. As soon as you have registered for the conference, you will receive an email that includes information on hotel bookings.

More than 200 abstracts were submitted after the first call. However, we are still gladly accepting abstract submissions for oral or poster presentations at the workshop sessions. New abstracts are continuously being reviewed by session convenors, and may be accepted up until 15 June 2012 at the latest. Hier ein kurzer Abriss über den Stand der Aktivitäten:

Nach einer gründlichen Analyse der gesammelten Informationen durch die Ressorts Internationales und F&E (Wittmann Stülpnagel) wurde ein Entwurf eines Action Plans einem Teil der Hochschulleitung (Verantwortliche für die Ressorts Internationales und F&E sowie Verwaltungsdirektor) vorgestellt. Dabei wurde folgendes Vorgehen festgelegt:
Der Massnahmenplan wird überarbeitet und als Leitdokument für die Planung der nächsten Jahre herangezogen. Dieses Vorgehen ist in den Jahreszielen des Ressorts F&E der ZHAW festgelegt. Vorgängig werden verschiedene Gremien detaillierter über die Initiative HRS4R informiert (Kommissionen, Hochschulleitung vgl angehängte Präsentation). Der Massnahmenplan wird dann in der Hochschulleitung diskutiert und im Laufe des Jahres 2012 verabschiedet bevor er in der englischen Übersetzung veröffentlicht werden kann.

Wenngleich dies eine Verzögerung bedeutet, so ist die Verankerung der Initiative in die Hochschulplanung erfreulich und wohl im Sinne des Erfinders.

171 Projektanträge wurden eingereicht und einerseits von den Forschungsinstitutionen selbst und andererseits extern von erfahrenen Experten in einem Evaluationsverfahren begutachtet, das auf wissenschaftliche Qualität fokussiert. Diese Experten gehören der jeweiligen Disziplin des Projekts an. Im  Anschluss an diese Beurteilung wählte der Lenkungsausschuss die Projekte aufgrund ihres Evaluationsergebnisses und des zur Verfügung stehenden Budgets aus.

58 exzellente Forschende werden einen Teil ihrer Forschung an einer Schweizer Hochschule durchführen
Insgesamt wurden Projekte von 58 exzellenten Nachwuchsforschenden ausgewählt: 4 aus Bulgarien, 21 aus der Tschechischen Republik, 3 aus Estland, 2 aus Lettland, 21 aus Polen und 7 aus Rumänien.
Von den ausgewählten Forschenden sind 21 Doktorierende und 37 PostDocs – und 26 sind Frauen.
Obwohl das Sciex-NMSch Programm allen Disziplinen offen steht, stammt die Mehrheit der ausgewählten Projekte aus den Technischen und Natur-Wissenschaften: Biologische Grundlagenwissenschaften (12 Projekte), Chemie (9 Projekte), Physik (8 Projekte) und Umweltwissenschaften (7 Projekte). 9 Projekte entstammen den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften.

Von den 58 Projekten entfallen
34 auf Universitäten
11 an ETHs
10  an Forschungsanstalten und
3 an Fachhochschulen (HES-SO, FHNW, ZHAW)

Von den zwei eingereichten ZHAW-Anträgen wurde ein Projekt aus dem Bereich Biotechnologie bewilligt. Eine junge Forscherin wird an der ZHAW in Wädenswil im Bereich Phytopharmazie forschen.

Although there are no calls for proposals planned for 2012— the new calls will have to wait until the budget decision for 2013-2016 is made, the SSSTC is not going into hibernation in 2012. On the contrary, in preparation for the next phase SSSTC, the program office is now organizing a number of Stepping Stone Symposia. Throughout the past three years, the SSSTC team has come to notice that, when it comes to research cooperation with China, synergistic effect may be created  through a “Swiss platform” in certain research fields. These platforms should include both academics and enterprises for the reason of increasing name recognition and Swiss competitiveness and innovation. We have therefore designed the Stepping Stone Symposia to bring industries and universities together with potential Chinese partners, with the goal of encouraging the formation of such platforms. In the best case scenario, these symposia should be sets of two symposia per topic: The first one should take place in Switzerland in order to lower the barrier for potential Swiss stakeholders to explore the possibility of an involvement in China. The second one would take place in China, about one year after the first one, so that the Swiss researchers/companies would have a chance to experience and understand the Chinese system firsthand.

After close to one year of preparation, I am glad to announce that we are now launching a Call for Abstracts for our first Stepping Stone Symposium on cancer research and neurodegenerative diseases. As of now, two major pharmaceutical companies* (others are still under negotiation) have confirmed their support for this symposium, which is essential in ensuring that translational research will be a focus of this symposium.

Die BFI-Botschaft 2013-2016 umreisst die wissenschafts- und bildungspolitischen Ziele und Massnahmen, die zur Förderung von Bildung, Forschung und Innovation beitragen werden. Sie betrifft die Bereiche Berufsbildung, ETH-Bereich, Hochschulen, Forschungs- und Innovationsförderung sowie die internationale Zusammenarbeit.

Das fast 300 seitige Dokument gibt einen guten Überblick über die aktuelle BFI-Landschaft. Die Stärke der Schweiz soll ausgebaut werden. Die Forschung der Fachhochschulen weiter im Aufbau gefördert werden, vor allem in den noch wenig etablierten Bereichen.

Insgesamt werden in der Botschaft die Themen, die aktuell beschäftigen (mit Ausnahmen, s.u.) aufgegriffen.

Obgleich der Wettbewerb um Fördermittel zu begrüssen ist, wird auf die wettbewerbsverzerrenden Finanzierungsunterschiede zwischen Uni und FH leider nicht eingegangen.

Starting up your own chemical company – a good idea?

We believe that starting up your own chemical company is an excellent idea in a world facing multiple challenges. Just think about the energy, water and health requirements of an ever-growing and aging global population. In all of these areas, chemists can make important contributions with new materials, smarter and greener processes, and new drugs, to name but a few.

You do not have to wait for a stroke of genius or huge amounts of money to start your own company. There are plenty of opportunities to take action and start your career as entrepreneur.

Let us introduce you to entrepreneurs and business professionals that know their markets and have found their innovative niche or creative solution to serve their customers. The workshop will work on four topics and every workshop topic will be introduced by industry professionals and experts. Following these inputs you will have sufficient time to work in smaller groups and to discuss crucial aspects of chemical entrepreneurship. Your group work will be based on a real case from Optical Additives GmbH, winners of the Swiss Technology Award 2011, with their Luminescent Solar Concentrators.
