The first issue this year (March 2012) is available below and focuses on the outcomes of the 184th CSO (COST-Committee of Senior Officials) meeting along with other interesting themes. COST plans to produce a monthly newsletter with a higher or lower frequency depending on the issues at hand.

The newsletter has a new look and will provide an interesting insight in COST’s activities.

Further Information:

If you tick the box ‘General Information on COST Activities’ on the Information Request Form (http://cost.7sheep.net/cost-information-request-forms, you will receive the newsletter via e-mail directly. On this form, you can specify detailed interests (mainly in COST Domains) which COST uses to send relevant mailings (e.g. Call for Expression of Interest on Personalised Medicine: http://www.cost.esf.org/events/pemed).

The option to sign up for the e-mail alert system on the website via this link: http://www.cost.eu/service/tools/e-mail_notification also remains valid. However, if you choose option 1, you have the advantage of the personalisation aspect.

The newsletter is also displayed on the homepage http://www.cost.eu (pdf-files) and it is also listed in the newsletter section which contains back issues http://www.cost.eu/library/newsletter.

Deadline: Thursday 15th March 2012

The Commission is launching a call for expression of interest targeting researchers of all ages, nationalities and disciplines residing in Europe. The aim is to select 20 excellent candidates, full of insight and constructive ideas for:

Defining researchers’ role and contribution to global societal challenges such as climate change, sustainable energy, poverty…;

Improving the career prospects and working conditions of researchers in Europe (funding, mobility, career structures, social security…);

Strengthening the social prestige and recognition of researchers as professionals, highlighting the central role of research and researchers in society and in the generation of growth and jobs;

Developing new, interactive communication channels between researchers and the Commission – in order to have a tangible impact on policy-making – and between European researchers themselves.

The Commission has already taken a series of initiatives to strengthen the research profession in Europe, by regularly involving well-known European-level stakeholder institutions and individual experts in its work, but currently has no channels to directly consult, listen to and interact with researchers themselves on a systematic basis. The Commission therefore wants to bring researchers from all across Europe to the heart of the policy-making process.

It is motivated by recognizing that society and ICT form a tightly coupled system that needs to be considered as a whole, rather than as two separate systems. To this end, FuturICT aims to develop a new science of the co-evolution of ICT with society, building on an integration of expertise from the social sciences, complexity science, and ICT.

The fifth AAL call for proposals is expected to be launched at the end of February 2012 and will be open for three months. Call Title: ICT-based Solutions for (Self) Management of Daily Life Activities of Older Adults at Home. The online application procedure is organized centrally by the AAL Association. The Swiss AAL funding budget for 2012 amounts to EUR 4 million. Research institutions, companies and end-user organizations are eligible for funding. Swiss organizations interested in participating are recommended to contact the Swiss AAL Office.

Additional information from the Pre-Announcement of AAL JP Call 5:

Most people prefer to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible. When support is necessary, there are different options: using technology and/or assistance delivered by somebody else.

Today, informal and family care is the predominant model of support for older adults. According to a 2010 estimate 80% of all care across Europe is given by family carers. Currently, informal care givers sum up to 19 Million persons across Europe. Family carers provide “primary assistance with activities of daily life”. However, formal care services are in many cases indispensable and paid care for older adults is a growing phenomenon across Europe. Migrant care workers play an important role in this sector.

The AAL JP Call 5 aims at the development of ICT-based solutions which enable and sustain older adults to continue managing their daily activities in their home. This call aims also at ICT-based solutions which support informal carers in their assistance.

We would like to draw your attention to the following Call 5 information and networking events:

Innsbruck, 5 March 2012 Joint AAL Information and Networking Day – Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg

Zurich, 9 March 2012, Swiss AAL Call 5 Information Event

Brussels, 13 March 2012 European AAL Info Day

Paris, 21 March 2012 Joint AAL Information and Networking Day – France, Switzerland and Luxembourg

These events address all stakeholders interested in participating in the upcoming AAL Call 5; they will give an overview of the AAL Joint Programme, provide essential information on Call 5 (focus areas, application procedure, funding rules etc.) and present a showcase of a running AAL project. The events in Innsbruck, Brussels and Paris and will also feature a networking session to give potential project partners from different fields and countries the opportunity to discuss their project ideas and establish valuable contacts.
