The FuturICT project is a response to the European Commissionʼs Flagship Call in the area of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) – Future and Emergent Technologies (FET).
It is motivated by recognizing that society and ICT form a tightly coupled system that needs to be considered as a whole, rather than as two separate systems. To this end, FuturICT aims to develop a new science of the co-evolution of ICT with society, building on an integration of expertise from the social sciences, complexity science, and ICT.

The conference aims to inform the Swiss scientific community about the FuturICT project and its possible impacts on different fields. The organizers welcome scientists of all fields, political decision makers, press representatives and the interested public. The conference will be held in English and Prof. Dirk Helbing, Scientific Coordinator of the FuturICT project, will attend as main speaker.

AAL Call 5: ICT-based Solutions for (Self) Management of Daily Life Activities of Older Adults at Home

The fifth AAL call for proposals is expected to be launched at the end of February 2012 and will be open for three months. Call Title: ICT-based Solutions for (Self) Management of Daily Life Activities of Older Adults at Home. The online application procedure is organized centrally by the AAL Association. The Swiss AAL funding budget for 2012 amounts to EUR 4 million. Research institutions, companies and end-user organizations are eligible for funding. Swiss organizations interested in participating are recommended to contact the Swiss AAL Office.

Most people prefer to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible. When support is necessary, there are different options: using technology and/or assistance delivered by somebody else.

Today, informal and family care is the predominant model of support for older adults. According to a 2010 estimate 80% of all care across Europe is given by family carers. Currently, informal care givers sum up to 19 Million persons across Europe. Family carers provide “primary assistance with activities of daily life”. However, formal care services are in many cases indispensable and paid care for older adults is a growing phenomenon across Europe. Migrant care workers play an important role in this sector.

The AAL JP Call 5 aims at the development of ICT-based solutions which enable and sustain older adults to continue managing their daily activities in their home. This call aims also at ICT-based solutions which support informal carers in their assistance.

The events in Innsbruck, Brussels and Paris and will also feature a networking session to give potential project partners from different fields and countries the opportunity to discuss their project ideas and establish valuable contacts.

COSME ersetzt das CIP Programm der EU für KMU

Das Förderprogramm der EU für KMU CIP , bei welchem die Schweiz nicht partizipieren konnte, wird in Zukunft durch das “Programme for the Competitiveness of Enterprises and SMEs” ersetzt.
Das neue Programm wird aber weniger auf Innovation als vielmehr auf Wettbewerbsfähigkeit, finanzielle Gesichtspunkte, und Internationalisierung legen.Innovationsgesichtspunkte, die für die anwendungsorientierte Forschung der ZHAW interessant sind, werden zukünftig im HORIZON 2020 Programm untergebracht. Dies dürfte die Möglichkeiten für Patizipation speziell für Fachhochschulen erweitern.
Folgende 3 Hauptaktionen des CIP werden voraussichtlich in die 2 Prioritäten ‘IndustrialLeadership’ and ‘Tackling Societal Challenges’ von HORIZON 2020 aufgenommen:

Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE)
ICTPolicy Support Programme (ICT-PSP)
eco-innovation

SCIEX: 6. Call für Forschende aus neuen EU Ländern

We are pleased to inform you that the 6th Sciex Call is now launched!
For this new call, researchers from Bulgaria, Hungary, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia are invited to submit their application until April 1st 2012.

Sciex is the promotion tool for research teams from all disciplines, consisting of team-members from the EU10 and Switzerland. Sciex Fellows from the EU10: BGR, CZE, EST, HUN, LTU, LVA, POL, ROM, SVK, SVN pursue their research in cooperation with Swiss researchers in Swiss research institutions. Ideal working and framework conditions support the success of their research. Sciex is part of the Swiss Contribution to the New Member States of the EU.

The programme is designed for doctoral candidates (duration min. 6 to 24 months) and post doctoral fellows (6 to 18 months).

For this new call, researchers from Bulgaria, Hungary, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia are invited to submit their application until April 1st 2012.

SCIEX: 5. Call für Austausch mit neuen EU Ländern lanciert.

Der 5. Call im SCIEX Projekt für den Austausch von Forschenden mit neuen EU Ländern ist lanciert. Die Ausschreibung ist für Forschende aus der Tschechischen Republik, Estland, Lettland, Polen und erstmalig Bulgarien und Rumänien.

Aktualisierung 20.01.2012:

ZAHW hat 2 Anträge eingereicht ( Bereiche Aviatik und Biotechnologie). Das ZHAW interne Scoring ist abgeschlossen. Die Anträge werden als nächstes von einem Evaluationsteam der CRUS begutachtet.

Science Europe: Neugründung der Forschungsförderinstitutionen

Science Europe wurde am 21. Okober in Berlin gegründet. Die neue Organisation vereint 50 europäische Forschungsorganisationen und wird in Brüssel ihren Sitz haben. Die Schweiz ist durch den Schweizer Nationalfonds als Gründungsmitglied in dieser Organisation vertreten.Ziel ist es, Forschungsaktivitäten der Mitglieder zu koordinieren und in Zusammenarbeit mit der Europäischen Kommission den Weg zu bahnen für einen europäischen Forschungsraum (European Research Area). Dieser Prozess wurde von zwei Organisationen maßgeblich unterstützt: der Vereinigung der Vorsitzenden der Forschungsorganisationen in Europa (EUROHORCS) und der European Science Foundation (ESF). Im Zuge der Neugründung von Science Europe hat sich EUROHORCS aufgelöst; mit der der ESF will die neue Organisation eng zusammenarbeiten.

Call: Swiss-Lithuanian Research Programme

Im Rahmen der Ostererweiterung der EU werden auch mit Lithauen Forschungsaktivitäten gefördert.

Für «Joint Research Projects» und «Scientific Institutional Partnerships» werden etwa CHF 10 Mio investiert. Der für den April 2011 angekündigkte Call wird nun im Oktober 2011 lanciert (aktualisiert 21.10.2011)

Weitere CHF 4 Mio stehen im Rahmen des SCIEX Programms für Lithauen zur Verfügung.

Eligible projects

The types of eligible projects are joint research projects and institutional partnerships. Lithuanian-Swiss joint research projects as well as projects of institutional partnerships between Swiss and Lithuanian public higher education and research institutions are favoured. Participation of the third party from other countries could be considered. In case of participation of the third party in the project, all cost of this participation should be paid from the resources of the third party. Joint research projects under this programme are considered to be based on mutual Lithuanian – Swiss research activities performed by project partners during the project duration and in the framework of the indicated eligible research areas of bilateral cooperation. Institutional partnership is considered to be a partnership between Lithuanian – Swiss higher education and research institutions, based on organizing mutual events, like conferences, workshops, seminars, trainings, etc. within the above indicated research areas.

Programme Budget and Project Size

A total amount of 9,708 Mio Swiss Francs will be spent on eligible projects. The size of each joint research project could be up to the amount of CHF 1.5 Mio. A maximum of 50% of the project budget can be allocated for the Swiss Partner. The size of each Institutional Partnership project can be up to CHF 50’000.-. Different projects can be combined.

Quality: Scientific quality as well as the quality of the partnership
Visibility: The Objective and its results should be visible in both countries.
Transparency: Information on the overall conditions and requirements for joint research and institutional partnership projects (domains, time frame, number and timing of the call, allocation, selection procedure, selection criteria) is public and widely available.

2. Scientific and/or technological quality and significance of the research
3. Innovative character
4. Validity and quality of the research methodology
5. Capacity and the justification of the research team
6. Feasibility within the budget and timeframe
7. Management efficiency

10. Dissemination

Procedures

The project proposals will be handed in by the Lithuanian Partner. Receiving office and Executing Agency is the Research Council of Lithuania. The Proposals will be inspected by peer reviewers. The final decision will be made by the Joint Selection Committee, including 3 Swiss and 3 Lithuanian senior scientists.

F&E Lunch: KMU-Innovationsförderung der EU – eine grosse Chance für die ZHAW

Animieren Sie ihre KMU-Partner, sich in EU Projekten zu beteiligen! Werden Sie dadurch ein attraktiver Partner für EU-Akteure!

In diesem F&E Lunch lernen Sie die Instrumente der KMU-Förderung und die Chancen für die ZHAW kennen.

“Die Fachhochschulen sind prädestiniert für die Teilnahme an EU Programmen mit KMU” so Pascal Halder von EU Research Zürich am Info-Lunch der ZHAW am 14.09.2011. Er zeigte deutlich die aktuelle Situation im Verhältnis zum Potential der Kooperation und stellte die Instrumente der Forschungsförderung vor.

Hans-Rudolf Helfer, Mitarbeiter des Instituts für Mechatronische Systeme berichtete eindrücklich von seinen Erfahrungen und stellte die wesentlichen Erfolgsfaktoren dar für ein erfolgversprechendes Proposal (z.B. Eurostars):

gute Ideen (wichtiger als der “Motivator Geld”)
internationale Vernetzung
zuverlässige Partner und professionelles Projektmanagement
KMU mit langfristiger Strategie und Interesse an interantionaler Vernetzung

SCIEX: Zwei Anträge der ZHAW sind akzeptiert worden.

Das Steering Commitee hat in seiner Sitzung am 24. August 2011 alle beiden SCIEX Anträge der ZHAW als förderungswürdig akzeptiert.

Beide Anträge kommen aus dem Departement Life Sciences und Facility Management der ZHAW. Beide Forscher werden aus Slowenien nach Wädenswil kommen. Der eine wird sich im Institut für Chemie und biologische Chemie (ICBC) mit Antioxidantien im Kaffee beschäftigen, der andere am Insitut für Umwelt und natürliche Ressorcen (IUNR) Biofilmen am Wurzelwerk von Pflanzen untersuchen.

Herzliche Gratulation und viel Erfolg bei den Projekten!

Insgesamt wurden 28 (von 96 eingereichten) Projekte herausragender ungarischer, litauischer, slowakischer und slowenischer Forschenden mit insgesamt 2.2 Millionen Franken bewilligt. Das entspricht rechnerisch einer Quote von ca. 30%. Die ZHAW Quote erreicht erfreuliche 100%. Von den 28 bewilligten Projekten kommen 14 von Universitäten, 11 vom ETH Bereich und 3 von Fachhochschulen.
